Gardener
Job Opportunity: Gardener at St. Mark’s Church
Location: St. Mark’s Haydock, West End Road, Haydock, WA11 0AX
Hours: 10 hours per week (flexible by arrangement)
Contract: Permanent, subject to a successful 6-month probationary period
Salary:
- Real Living Wage: £12.60 per hour (£6,570 per annum, subject to normal PAYE and NI deductions)
Holidays: 68 hours per annum, including Bank Holidays and two extra days for Christmas (pro-rata)
Notice Period: 4 weeks
DBS: Not required
Other Benefits: Pension scheme available
About the Role:
Join St. Mark’s Church as a Gardener, responsible for the general upkeep of the church grounds, including the Church, Centre, T.A.N.G.O. Warehouse, car park, graveyard, dog walk, and children’s play area. Your work will help create a welcoming environment for the community.
Key Responsibilities:
- Maintain the church grounds, including mowing lawns, tending to flower beds, and pruning hedges.
- Ensure all gardening equipment is clean, safe, and stored securely.
- Organise and oversee a volunteer team for gardening tasks.
- Report any damage or defects to the appropriate personnel.
- Participate in emergencies as required.
- Undertake routine paperwork and maintain an organised approach.
Key Attributes:
Essential:
- Basic gardening skills and knowledge of health and safety procedures.
- Ability to prioritise workload and communicate effectively with all levels.
- Physically capable of performing gardening duties, including lifting.
- Keen eye for detail and ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
- Respect and support for St. Mark’s as a Christian organisation.
Desirable:
- Relevant experience in gardening.
- Regular worshipping member of a Christian church.
- Full UK driving license.

Verger
Position: Casual Church Verger (Funerals and Weddings)
Location: St. Mark’s Church Haydock
Wage: £35 per burial / £55 per Funeral / £75 per Wedding
Contract: Casual
About the Role:
Join our team at St. Mark’s Church as a Casual Church Verger, responsible for ensuring the smooth running of funerals, burials, and weddings. This role is key in creating a welcoming environment and supporting families during significant moments.
Key Responsibilities:
- Prepare the church, car park, and graveyard for services.
- Ensure the space is neat and welcoming.
- Collaborate with the admin team on logistical details.
- Complete necessary paperwork for funerals and burials.
- Welcome attendees and assist with their needs during services.
- Manage visuals and sound during funerals.
Key Attributes:
- Active, regular member of St. Mark’s Church.
- Friendly, approachable, and a team player.
- Physically capable and detail-oriented.
- Good IT skills and a willingness to learn.
